Well, the pilot episode was released. The actual show won't start airing until January of 2010.

Because Galactica was, is, and might be my favorite show of all time, and given the fact that since I work in the entertainment industry and I tend to be uber-picky about what i watch, I was filled with both boyish excitement and grandpappy skepticism. Well, needless to say they had in me in the first 20 minutes. Right off the bat at the 1 minute mark there was a room full of naked chicks having sex and boobies abound. Then, not 20 minutes later, a terrorist believing in a one true, all powerful god, suicide bombs himself and and train full of others to oblivion.

Now not everything about this premiere episode was perfect. Aside from my two favorite scenes int he beginning, as it moved towards the middle of the story it did feel as one reviewer put it, "Like a CW show." And I have to agree, but I'm not that scared about it. When the miniseries for BSG came out, it had it's share of issues that seemed to be weeded out when the show went to series. And since it's going to be almost the exact same crew and producers helming this show, I'm not too worried. Where Galactica hit a little to the right of the mark, this show hits a little to the left.

However, there's a happy ending for all you geeks out there. The final third of the story really picked up and brought me back to the core of what made Galactica so great. It's about the struggles of the characters. About each of them dealing with their flaws and struggling towards the light of personal salvation, and never quite making it there. I won't spoil the ending for you, but if you're a BSG transplant and are looking for a new show to fill that empty spot in your TV soul. This one has great potential. And as it should. It's from Ron Moore and David Eick, with a dash of Remi Aubuchon (24).

It was smart for Universal and SciFi (soon to be "SyFy") to drop the Pilot straight to DVD now instead of waiting for two reasons; 1) With Galactica officially ended and so much hype about Caprica, the fans needed a little something to tie them over. With Caprica on DVD and "The Plan" another BSG TV movie coming this fall, we should have plenty of space crack to hold us over. and 2) With it being on DVD and not rated, I get my boobies and Christian terrorists.

Mac vs. PC vs. Me

I'm a PC and my girlfriend is a Mac. I've been PC since I was 4 years old and my dad bought a Commodore c64 from Service Merchandise and I started programming the bouncing yellow ball. So imagine my dismay when my PC crash (not the PC's fault, my foots fault) and I was reduced to using my girlfriend's Mac Book until the PC was repaired. The first thing I did was install Windows XP using Boot Camp. And Away I went.

At first I was frustrated with the lack of a right mouse button on the touch pad, the fact that you can't click something by simply tapping the touch pad, you have to use the button. Because I didn't have any other options I drudged through it.

After a few weeks of working and editing on the Mac Book using Win XP, I started to realize that Windows was running faster on this angelic white Mac Book. Not only that, but running Adobe Premiere CS4 went off with out a hitch and I was surprised at how smooth the HD video I was editing played back with live rendering. Something my bulky PC desktop wasn't not keen on doing. Then something extraordinary happened that sent me over the edge. I discovered that with Premiere CS4 you can export Final Cut Pro projects in xml into CS4, only on a Mac. I was floored because I am a Premiere guy and hate Final Cut. But I work with a lot of editors and studios that use Final Cut. Now I have the ability to move back and fourth in both.

So what does this mean? I'm buying a Macbook Pro and running Windows 7 on it. I know, I know. But I'll never buy an iPhone... at least not yet.

Oh Danny Boy

I know I'll get emails for this, but what the hell. Fuck 'em.

First off, yes, I watch American Idol. Deal with it. I also watch NASCAR. And no, I don't live in a trailer or pump kin. However, I do enjoy watching and critiquing young talent and seeing if I'm still on the ball with pop culture. Thus, I watch American Idol and playing at home.

This season has been a rare one, with talents ranging from Norman Gentle to Adam Lambert, who is nothing short of Freddy Mercury reincarnated. One such talent wedged in between and still on the show as of this week, is Danny Gokey. The lovable widower who has the looks, talent, and personality to be a pop star. Having lost someone close to me I can relate to the guy. I'm very happy for his current and hopefully ongoing success. But for the love of Simon Cowell's hairless chest stop singing spiritual songs! Every week it's like he's trying to remind us that he lost his wife. Which is devastating, I know. But can't you just sing a fast beat fun tune at least once?

I hope I haven't offended everyone. But it's a contest about talent, which he's got. Now let's see some more of it.

Cool Slang Word of the Week

So as I journey through this life I find it necessary to pickup and use cool slang terms from other enlightened peeps I cross paths with. Yes, it's time to put those clickers down and focus out attention to another sort of activities that can only become available during the simmering summer months. No I'm not talking about frisbee or softball. I'm talking about Comics! No, not the funny ones, the one with pictures and balloons! Come on, did you really think I'd be spending my summer out in the sun. Hell no! I need SOMETHING to keep me inside and away from exercise. With the exceptions of Last Comic Standing and the new show Swingtown, I've been burying my pasty noodle in comic books. So I figured I'd post a list of what I'm reading and a very brief comment about each series.

Transformers - There are several series of comic books for The Transformers: Revelations (The next phase of the main story arc in the retelling of the Transformers original characters. This series is a much needed update to the great characters, but poor story front he original. Very mature themes, realistic relationships, and great incorporation of current events.) Movie Sequal: The Reign of Starscream (Not a terrible sequel to the 2007 blockbuster toy commercial by Michael Bay.) and finally the soon to come out Animated series (Based on the newly revamped "Ben 10" style cartoon on Cartoon Network. If the comic is anything like the show it should be great fun in an acceptable medium. Looking forward to it.)

Pax Romana, Transhuman, Red Mass for Mars - I'm lumping these together because they are all written by critically acclaimed writer Jonathan Hickman who's premiere comic, The Nightly News, was a smash hit. He writes all three but he only illustrates Pax Romana. His style and aesthetic make you feel like you're reading a frakin' novel. He crams so much information and story into 32 pages you almost feel tired after reading one issue. Which is great because by the time the next one comes out you'll have fully digested what he was trying to get across. The artwork in Pax Romana is amazing and his ground breaking story telling techniques are a wonderful change of pace from the mundane comics that litter the shelves today. I highly recommend The Nightly News. I'm only half way through the six issue series and it's already blown me away.

Whew! Speaking of tired... well, I'm going to wrap it up for now. I'll come back at you later with more of what I'm reading.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.anthonyjcox.com/2008/06/what-im-reading-yes-im-reading-surprise.html' title='What I'm Reading... This year I've been asked to direct the only screenplay that will be read during this year's festival. I'm really excited because in my awesome cast are two movie (& Broadway) stars. Ashlie Atkinson, who played Theresa on "Rescue Me" and starred on Broadway in "Fat Pig" and "The Ritz" and Cody Hanford, who played Flounder in "The Little Mermaid" on Boradway and stars opposite Dakota Fanning in "Hounddog." The name of the screenplay we're reading is "My Dog Trash Can" written by Peitz Peterson, which will start at 7:30pm at the Tisch School. I hope to see some of you there.

Getting LOST during the writer's strike

So with the writer's strike continuing for God knows how long, no new shows of worth starting mid season, and Galactica's season premiere being pushed back to April, I've finally decided to "crash" into that mysterious island in the South Pacific. Great show. Most of the first act I was thinking, "Ok, this is pretty good. At least for Broadway" while Arthur was assembling his team round Knights. Sorry, Knights of the Round Table. Then Arthur and his Knights arrived at the French Castle. Holy Merde! The show just took off and I was in stitches for the rest of act one and all of act two. I was very familiar with the music so I easily got into the show. The best part was the message of the show and how they involved the audience. I love it when a good show breaks the 4th wall.

The 47th Floor

For several weeks now I've been working as the Assistant Director for a web series with a small film studio here in New York. Here is the culmination of the last couple of weeks.

Enjoy

William's Christening

Greetings everyone. This is the NYU thesis short film that I've been working on. William's Christening. I held a few different positions during the shoot. The most exciting was dolly grip. I was actually responsible for how some of the shots looked. I was the one moving the camera on some of the shots. Very cool. Anyway, just thought that you all might want to see what I've been up to the last few weeks. Below you'll find links to a photo gallery of me on set, a link to the home page for the film, and a link to more on set photos. Enjoy!

William's Christening Home Page
More on set photos
